Groceries
by Chet
I love food. I love to eat, cook, taste, attempt, bake [insert other verbs associated with food]…
With that said you all surely understand how important groceries are to me. I’m not a snob by any means. I have no problem buying store brand items. I’ve yet to notice a difference when I’m dealing with canned goods. I must admit however that there are certain items I like to have. This week I began my life in Nebraska. I arrived in the Cornhusker state just in time for Nicole to need some groceries in the apartment. Great! I headed out on Tuesday to pick up the things that we needed to make delicious foods at home.
I arrived at Sunmart Groceries. It is the closest grocery store to our apartment, so that is convenient. This was the worst grocery buying experience I’ve ever had. I was firstly ignored at the deli counter, however she was quite pleasant after she came over to help. The store is not organized in a sensible way. I was looking for tortillas so I went to the bread aisle, nothing there. Disappointed I moved on. Later I found the tortillas with the cheese(?). Next in my search were instant mash. (Told you I wasn’t a snob.) They had none. This store carries a specialized Jagermeister cooler, but not instant mash? Okay fine.
This is all I’m going to say about this: They don’t sale Wolf Brand Chili here.
From there I started searching for Kosher Salt. I discovered that I love Kosher Salt, I’m not entirely sure why, about 6 months ago. When I got down the baking aisle and saw that they had low sodium salt I thought I was in luck. Nope. This store carries every type of salt known to basic kitchen life, but not Kosher. Too bad I don’t have an ice cream crank! To top off this adventure I couldn’t find any habanero peppers or brie. Those last two items are much more understandable, but disappointing nonetheless.
I finally decided to end my misadventure and head to the check out lines. This was the most rude checker I’ve ever encountered. She wouldn’t talk to me which I can forgive. Her biggest shortcoming was her inability to pack my items into a bag. She put cans with my eggs, cans with my bread, milk cartons with cans, it was terrible. She then rolled her eyes at me as I rearranged my bags in front of her rather than paying her.
Since then I’ve had to go to other stores in search of my missing items. I am still missing a few.
Hopefully I will get this figured out before it’s too late, and I go insane.
Until next time.
PS: It’s really hard to write blogs when you’re limited on materials. I need to start making things happen in order to get some better reading up here. I have some movies I’d like to write about. We’ll see.
You are very correct that chili is tasty and fun to make, but even for someone like me who loves made from scratch foods, there is just something awesomly satisfying about opening a can if wolf brand and doing a quick heat.
Wolf Brand Chilli indeed!! Chilli is a very simple meal to make and you can change the receipe to make it your own:
3 lbs hamburger
3 cups onions, chopped
3 cups green peppers, chopped
8 tablespoons butter (1 stick)
2 quarts (2×28 oz. + 1×14 oz.) canned chopped tomatoes
5 tsp chili powder
2 1/2 tsp salt
1/2 to 1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp ground cumin
2 40-oz. dark red kidney beans
Brown hamburger in skillet, remove from grease and place into 4 qt saucepan. Cook onions & green peppers in leftover grease. Remove from grease and add to cooked hamburger.
Add tomatoes and spices. Cook on low-medium heat for about 45 minutes. Add kidney beans with juice from cans.
Cook for another 15 minutes, or just until beans start to split op
